Juris Doctor & MBA

Become a business leader with legal expertise.

The JD/MBA dual-degree program is designed for students who intend to concurrently earn a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and an MBA. The degrees are offered through the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and the E. J. Ourso College of Business at LSU. Students earn overlapping credit hours and complete both degrees in four years versus completing them separately in five years (three years for a JD and two years for an MBA).

Pursuing a JD/MBA allows lawyers to understand their clients’ business and business executives to understand how to make legal decisions and work with legal counsel. Armed with legal and business knowledge, you can apply for a range of jobs across both legal and business sectors.

STEM Designated

The Flores MBA Program now offers a STEM designation across our curriculum. Incorporating a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) framework with core business principles, this transformative MBA pathway equips students with industry-specific skills to make data-driven decisions in dynamic business environments.

International students in STEM degree programs can apply for a 24-month STEM extension of their F-1 Optional Practical training.

Curriculum & Program Structure

Students earn 12 hours of credit toward the JD for courses completed in the Flores MBA program and 18 hours of credit toward the MBA for courses completed in the law school. The course credit is also counted toward the degree (JD or MBA) from the institution where the courses were taken.

Although granting of concurrent credit may be referred to as a “dual degree program,” each degree is awarded separately. A student who successfully completes the required courses of study receives two degrees: a Juris Doctor awarded by the LSU Hebert Law Center and a Master of Business Administration awarded by the E. J. Ourso College of Business. The only change in either degree program is the awarding of concurrent credit: a student pursues parallel degrees with common areas of study.

Students are initially required to complete their first year at either the law school or business school.

Students who wish to pursue law first may choose to complete either the first or the first and second years of law school before completing the first year of the business school’s Flores MBA Program. After completing the first year of the Flores MBA Program, the student would follow a combined curriculum of law and business school courses. Students must complete Evidence (LAW 5605) before being allowed to enroll in Trial Advocacy (LAW 5608), conducted over three days, one week before the fall semester of the third year.

Those who wish to pursue the MBA curriculum first would complete their first year at the business school, followed by the first year of law school. Students would then pursue both law and business courses toward completion of the final requirements of each program.
