September 05, 2023
LSU has named Brandon Common the permanent Vice President for Student Affairs, effective September 1, pending approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors. Common began his career at LSU as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students in December 2020, and has served as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs since January 2023.
As Vice President for Student Affairs, Common will have executive oversight of Campus Life, the LSU Olinde Career Center, Disability Services, the LSU Food Pantry, Greek Life, the Student Health Center, the William A. Brookshire Military & Veterans Student Center, Parent & Family Programs, Residential Life, Student Advocacy & Accountability, the Collegiate Recovery Program, and the University Recreation Center. Collectively, these units work together to ensure that the hours students spend outside the classroom prepare them for success inside the classroom.
“Dr. Brandon Common is a very experienced student affairs professional,” said LSU Executive Vice President and Provost Roy Haggerty. “During his time as Associate Vice President, and then as Interim Vice President, he has been very effective in managing his portfolio of duties. LSU is fortunate to have him, and I welcome him into the permanent position.”
Common brings more than 15 years of professional experience in higher education in the areas of Greek Life, Residential Life, Student Conduct, Student Government, Student Involvement, Family Programs, and New Student Programs. Common has held numerous roles at various institutions, including Director, Assistant Dean of Students, and Assistant Vice President prior to joining LSU. While at LSU, Common has served as LSU’s principal student advocate and provided strategic leadership for programs, services, events, and experiences that enhance the LSU student experience.
“I am both humbled and thankful for the opportunity to serve LSU as the next Vice President for Student Affairs,” Common said. “LSU is a special place that has outstanding leadership, a clear vision for student success, talented faculty and staff, and outstanding students. I am excited to lead a division that is committed to serving our institution in advancing our Scholarship First Agenda by supporting LSU students in their out-of-class experiences.”
Common received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, his master’s degree from Ohio University, and his Ph.D. in Educational Organization and Leadership - Higher Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
