Student Engagement

One of the key missions of the CFFS is to engage LSU students in research and other academic opportunities in Global French Studies. We have facilitated undergraduate research opportunities, as well as hosted workshops on digital humanities and creative writing.

On September 26th and 27th 2024, the CFFS showcased LSU undergraduate research in the 1805 Concert Pre-Show DIgital Humanities Exhibition. Attendees of the event were able to look at the 2024 Department of French Studies Senior Seminar collaborative project on life in Territorial New Orleans, as well as the undergraduate-led New Orleans Historic Theater Database Project, which each provided context for the evening’s entertainment.

Undergraduates presenting at the Consortium of the Revolutionary Era conferenceFrom February 22-24th, 2024, LSU undergraduate students presented their research at the Consortium on the Revolutionary Era annual conference that was held in Baton Rouge. Under the direction of CFFS Director Jeffery Leichman, students developed a searchable database of French-language theatrical performances in territorial New Orleans, based on advertisements in Le Moniteur de la Louisiane. Participants include Rhys Borders, Blaire Newburger, Bella Frederick, Victor Herbin, Ansley Barlow, Elizabeth Murray and Morgan Carter.

In this creative writing workshop, students explored the art, ethics, and politics of translation to welcome multilinguism and multiculturalism in our writing. We looked at translation at both  the micro and macro levels: thinking about the difficulty of translating one given story, one given word, or one’s culture, one’s world. We learned how (self)translation can be used as atool toward revision, and what the languages we speak/are in the process of learning can teach us about the words we choose and the stories we write. The workshop was intended to allow students to explore creative expression in French, and is open to students from beginning to advanced levels.
