Louisiana Certified Habitat Program
Friends of Hilltop Arboretum is administering
The Louisiana Certified Habitat Program
in the Baton Rouge Region
What you plant on your property matters!
Your property can be a model that inspires others.
The Louisiana Native Plant Society (LNPS.org) and its chapters and partners invite Louisiana residents, businesses, schools, and public institutions to certify their outdoor space as native habitat, which requires plants native to our region. Native plants form the base of all habitat types and natural ecosystems. They provide food and shelter for native wildlife, including birds and pollinators.
Any Louisiana resident, school, organization or business may apply for bronze (25 species), silver (50 species) or gold (75 species) level and can be upgraded for free at any time. Any property size, from urban garden to rural acreage, is eligible. The application form has a convenient checklist of common native plants in Louisiana landscapes. The cost for certification and 9 x 12″ metal yard sign is $45. Current Hilltop members are eligible for a 10% discount ($40).
As a regional member of the Louisiana Native Plant Society, Hilltop administers LNPS’ Louisiana Certified Habitat program for these Baton Rouge region parishes: Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Livingston, St. Helena, and Tangipahoa. How to apply:
Application steps and options are listed in the right-hand sidebar. Once your application and payment are received, a representative will contact you about the vetting process and may schedule a visit. If your space meets the criteria, your garden sign will be delivered. If not, your application fee will be returned.
Together we are connecting habitats, one garden at a time.
