Prevention is key
Many dogs and cats experience oral and dental diseases that may affect their overall health. It is essential to take preventive measures to prevent oral pain and discomfort in our companion pets to help them have a great quality of life.
Now at LSU, our Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist™, Dr. Melissa Blazevich (LSU 2016) provides complete dental care and oral surgery for pets, including oral health exams and advanced veterinary dental treatments. Many advanced procedures such as endodontic therapy (root canals), periodontal therapy, advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery, treatment of oral tumors, orthodontics (braces), and restorations (cavity treatment) can be performed. What to Expect
- You do not need a referral, but please call your veterinarian to send over any previous records and radiographs they have for your pet.
- As a veterinary teaching hospital, we appreciated your patience and understanding in allowing these future veterinarians to interact with you and your pet.
- Dentistry and Oral Surgery consultations and surgical procedures are scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, and certain Fridays of each month.
- Upon your visit to the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital, you will be greeted by a veterinary student who will take you to an examination room to collect a thorough history and physical examination on your pet.
- Once a history and physical exam is performed, the veterinary student will then consult with the Dentist/Oral Surgeon to further discuss your pet’s case. Together, a plan will be formulated that will best fit the needs of your pet and then discussed with you.
- After a plan is discussed, the Dentistry/Oral Surgery Nurse will present you with an estimate. This allows us to help owners discuss and plan for the expected and unexpected financial outcomes of a procedure.
- Please note - procedures and consultations are often scheduled on different days.
This generally does require 2 separate visits to the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
- The initial appointment is for the consultation.
- The second appointment is for the anesthetized procedure.
- On the day your pet is scheduled to undergo general anesthesia, your pet will need
to be at the hospital by 7:30am. Once the procedure is completed, we will call you
to schedule a discharge time.
- Please note, Dentistry and Oral Surgery patients generally are discharged on the same day unless other recommendations have been discussed.
