Introduction
Cost minimization has traditionally been the objective of chemical process design. However, growing environmental awareness now demands process technologies that minimize or prevent production of wastes. The development of such environmentally benign processes requires a tool which can perform a quantitative measurement of the pollution impact of a process.
Methodology
The pollution Assessment program is a pollution prevention and measurement module, which can be used to assess the environmental impact of chemical and refinery processes. It is based on the pollution index methodology of EPA. This approach defines pollution indices which can be used to compare the performance of different chemical processes.
The Pollution Assessment Program uses the Waste Reduction Algorithm (WAR). The WAR algorithm can be used to minimize waste in the design of new processes as well as in the modification of existing processes. It is based on the generic pollution balance of a process flow diagram as described below.
The Environmental Impact Theory
This theory is a generalization of the WAR algorithm which discusses the methodology for evaluating potential environmental impacts and illustrating its use in the design and modification of chemical processes. The environmental impacts of a chemical process are generally caused by the energy and material that the process takes from and emits to the environment. The potential environmental impact is a conceptual quantity that can not be measured. However, it can be calculated from related measurable quantities.
A detailed description of the environmental impact theory and the program is given by K.S. Telang (M.S. thesis, Louisiana State University, 1998). For additional information, contact the Minerals Processing Research Institute.
Installation
The installation procedure and hardware and system requirements for The Pollution Assessment are given below. The setup program will install the The Pollution Assessment program and the Help system to your hard disk.
Hardware & System Requirements
To run the Pollution assessment, you must have certain hardware and software installed on your computer. The system requirements include:
- Any IBM compatible machine with Pentium 133 processor or higher
- 8 megabytes available space (minimum)
- Any display supported by Windows 7
- A mouse or other suitable pointing device
- Windows 7 or later, or Windows NT 4.0
Installation Procedure
The Pollution Assessment program must be installed under Windows 7 or Windows NT. The procedure to install the program is described as following:
- Run the "PollInst.exe" program under Windows 7 or NT.
- The default destination directory is "C:\program Files\Pollution" into which the Pollution Assessment, program will be copied when the setup program is run. This can be changed in the setup program.
- Run the program "pollution.exe" in the installation directory.
To run The Pollution Assessment, the system requires certain .dll and .ocx files. The installation program copies the required files into the system directory if those files are not available in the system. If older versions of the files exist, then the installation program updates these files. The setup program provides an option to restore the initial .dll and .ocx files in the uninstall procedure. If the destination computer is on a network, the program can be installed only if the user has the permission to install(contact the system administrator).
