Hooding Ceremonies
The School of Information Studies Hooding Ceremony is a special opportunity for SIS graduates to celebrate the completion of their graduate degrees with their classmates, faculty, staff, family and friends. Held three times each year in December, May and August, the ceremony provides a more intimate celebration than LSU’s university-wide commencement ceremonies.
During the ceremony, graduates are recognized individually and presented with their academic hood, a traditional symbol of graduate-level achievement. The hooding ceremony celebrates not only the completion of a degree, but also the hard work, dedication and accomplishments that students have contributed throughout their time in the School of Information Studies.
SIS graduates are encouraged to invite their families and friends to share in this milestone. The ceremony is an opportunity for the SIS community to come together, recognize the newest members of the profession and celebrate the beginning of graduates’ next chapters in information studies, library science, archives, records management and related fields.
FAQs
A SIS Student will be able to participate in one of our Hooding Ceremonies in the semester that they graduate. A student may defer their walk in our ceremony up to two semesters, but may not walk before they are officially graduated with us (i.e, if you graduate in August 2026, you may not walk in the May 2026 hooding ceremony but you may walk in the May 2027 ceremony.)
SIS hooding ceremonies take place three times a year, in December for Fall graduates, May for Spring graduates, and August for Summer graduates. The ceremony typically takes place in the evening the day before main LSU commencement.
SIS's Events Manager will send out the initial RSVP email to all SIS students via their lsu email about a month before the ceremony. At this time, you will provide your guest's RSVPs as well.
- Anyone wishing to walk in the hooding ceremony must fill out the required RSVP survey, which will be distributed a month prior to the ceremony via your lsu email.
- Students must provide a biography to the events manager at least 5 days before the ceremony to be read during their hooding. (this will be requested in an email following your RSVP)
- All students are required to wear masters regalia and must bring their hood to the hooding ceremony. This can be purchased in person through the LSU Bookstore or Online at this link.
SIS Hooding Ceremonies are an opportunity for our completely virtual students to get a chance to meet their professors and fellow students in person for the first time. Because of how special this is, we are not offering virtual options for our hooding ceremony currently. However, if you have need of a virtual streaming option for a friend or family member to watch the ceremony, please reach out to us and we will work with you if we can.
Additionally, the ceremony will be recorded and this recording will be edited and posted on our YouTube channel for you to share with friends and family as well.
